Twelve thematic sections introduce readers to the painting, sculpture, typography, photography, film and stage design of the time, providing examples of the work of hundreds of artists, from expressionism in 1908 to abstraction in 1928. Attention is paid not only to names that are famous today but to numerous other artists who helped to create the fierce atmosphere of a hectic period, and almost forty magazines and anthologies of the period interlinking Central European art centres such as Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Krakow, Zagreb, Belgrade, Košice, Lvov, Warsaw, Vilnius and Novi Sad.
