In this work, first published in 1883, Rudolf Westphal (1826-92) gives an extensive account of melody and rhythm in ancient Greek music. Westphal is full of admiration for Aristoxenus' contribution to musicology and follows the latter's distinction between melody (quality of tone) and rhythm (quantity of tone).
