The French geologist Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond (1741-1819) went in 1784 to Britain to investigate the basalt formations on the Hebridean island of Staffa, and published an account of his journey in 1797. This two-volume annotated translation, prefaced by a short biography of Faujas, was published in 1907.
