Originally published 1882-98, this monumental ten-part work by Harvard scholar Francis James Child (1825-96) contains the text and variants of 305 ballads, with detailed commentary and critical apparatus. Volume 1, Part 1 originally appeared in 1882. This reissue from 1898 contains a biographical sketch of Child, along with ballads 1-28.
