Francis (František) Korbel - Jaroslav Olša jr.Francis (František) Korbel (1831-1920) The book summarizes information about a Czech patriot who, after 1848, was forced to flee the Austrian Empire for political reasons and set sail for America with 10 dollars in his pocket. Korbel was one of the first Czechs to settle on the US Pacific Coast. He was without doubt the very first immigrant from Bohemia to find success in California, ultimately becoming the most influential Czech of his day in San Francisco. In addition, Korbel was also the most prominent figure of Czech California at the turn of the 20th century and the first Czech-born millionaire in the United States. Moreover, Korbel is the only Czech of his era to leave behind a significant footprint still existing today in the Golden State. This is largely because of the company he founded with his two brothers Antonín and Josef. Although it no longer publishes magazines or logs sequoia trees as it did in the 19th century, its wines continue to be sold under its more than century-old Korbel brand name.
